Please offer advice to prevent woodpeckers (downy) from attacking cedar siding. I’ve plugged holes with steel wool and chile powder, but this isn’t fully effective. I just recently put out suet feeders nearby, and did notice one downy quite quickly. Any other advice?
Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with woodpeckers damaging your home! Unfortunately, birds lack the ability to taste spiciness, so chili powder may be unlikely to help.
I suggest you take a look at some of the ideas offered in this article from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It offers many different deterrents to woodpeckers, including “life-sized plastic owls with paper wings, reflective streamers, plastic eyes strung on fishing line, roost boxes, suet feeders, and a sound system which broadcasts woodpecker distress calls followed by the call of a hawk.”
Unfortunately, woodpeckers are persistent. You may have to try multiple tactics to see what works for you. I would love to hear which of the options you decide to try and see how well they worked. Good luck!
